Pikes Peak Velo Team Member Profile (2006)

Name:  Michael Hagen

Number of Years Racing:

 3 bicycling (but ~20 triathlon)

Most Memorable Race:

2004 Tour of the Gila, 1st Stage 3 and overall, Cat 4.  It was my first stage race.  I felt fantastic on the finishing climb of the last stage.  It was one of those great experiences where everything just felt right.

Least Memorable Race:

My first road race back in North Carolina a few years back.  I rode through two mass crashes, even had tire marks on my upper arm.  Didn’t crash, but not the most reassuring first race experience.

Type of Racing (Road, Cross, MTB…):

Mostly road and TT (a lot of those in triathlon/duathlon), some cross, I’m scared of MTB!

Why I ride my bike:

I rode a bike as a kid, largely for fun, but also, because we lived a mile or so out of town, just to get around.  I got into triathlon after college, desperately looking for something I could be good at, figuring there could only be so many crazy people willing to try it and hoping that persistence would help make up for mediocre talent.  I found it quite fun and soon became addicted, but initially the bike was definitely my weakest leg.  I decided to work on that by focusing on bicycling.  I figured participating in bicycle races was the best way to improve my riding.  I also did a couple of bicycle tours in Europe and absolutely loved it.  Bicycling is definitely the best way to see a new area.  Finally, I’ve lately become a rather dedicated, perhaps somewhat insane, bicycle commuter.  So I might as well put those miles to use in some races.

Occupation:

Major, US Army; Commander, US Army World Class Athlete Program (Training program for Army Olympians), Fort Carson
